The Icon Match racing Series will make its UK debut at GJW Direct SailFest 14, bringing match racing to a new audience and increasing the accessibility of this particular sailing discipline.
Match racing has been one of sailing's most high profile activities, starting with the America's Cup way back in 1851, included in the 2012 Olympics and of course the ever popular Alpari Match Racing Tour. Dinghy match racing is not a new concept but is relatively novel to the UK.
After each day of multi class racing at SailFest, there will be match racing using the Icon dinghy, an ideal choice, providing a modern 2 person boat, that is highly manoeuvrable and quick to accelerate, but not too extreme allowing the competitors to concentrate on their duelling and combats. SailRacer will provide live GPS tracking and online commentary, and with racing close to the shore the Icon Series will be very spectator friendly.
SailRacer will also be working with the Icon CA, Cirrus Raceboats and Frensham Pond SC to setup a major new annual event that will be run early in 2015 just after the Dinghy Show. The event ‘The Icon Cup’ will be run on a knock-out format with several flights of Icons over a single weekend. It will be invitational event open to many of the best dinghy racers along similar lines to the well established ‘Endeavour Trophy’ plus a few ‘wild card’ entries including the winner of the series.
Free entry to spectate and/or race but please register interest at the GJW Direct SaiFest event site as places are limited.
GJW Direct SailFest 14 is the second edition of the Festival of Sail, combining multi class racing, water sport tasters, shore side exhibits and workshops, demo sails and try a boat sessions.
