Several recent international studies rank our city as one of the most liveable places in the world. But Helsinki is of course also a great place just to visit with a lot to offer. I hope that besides racing, you will have time to en- joy not only our city’s shores, islands and the sea but also Helsinki as a dynamic city. Helsinki’s long and fascinating history meets the fast-paced present, right here where the east meets the west. The cultural side of the city is also worth exploring; the music and artistic life is simply blooming especially dur- ing the white nights of the summer. new Helsinki Music Centre internationally acclaimed for its architecture and acoustics. Design and architecture are an integral part of the cityscape which for the next decades will undergo a dramatic change when old cargo ports will be reconstructed for housing and commercial purposes.

The maritime character of the city will stead- ily continue to grow stronger as most of the new districts are located right next to the seashore. Today, the state of the maritime environment is a question that cannot be overlooked. Raising the awareness of the condition of the Baltic Sea is a central priority of Helsinki. Together with major cities and other actors in the region we aim at tackling central problems through a special Challenge campaign.
