Her Royal Highness the Princess of Asturias announced as Honorary President of the Organizing Committee

Real Club Nautico de Valencia held a press conference on the morning of Friday 19 April 2013 to launch the 420 World and Ladies World Championship that will take place in Valencia from 22-30 July.

Manuel Pons, President of Real Club Náutico de Valencia, Mateo Castella, general Sports director of the regional Government, Cristobal Grau local Sports Counselor of Valencia as well as the President of Royal Spanish Sailing Federation (RFEV) José Angel Rodriguez, the President of Valencia Sailing Federation José Martinez and the regional secretary of 420 Class in Valencia, Borja Boronat – who is also part of the only Valencian team competing in the 420 Worlds - presented the event to public and media.

The President of RCN Valencia thanked all the institutions for their support and remarked that the International 420 Class has trusted us to organize this race. “I would like to invite the whole city to take part in the event,” he said.

In Pons’ words, the Championship will be a great example for Valencia as a venue for great sailing events, as the city would be the sailing venue if Madrid is selected as host city for the 2020 Olympics. In this sense, RCN Valencia’s President highlighted the support given to the Club and the regatta by Theresa Zabell, First Vice-President of Spanish Olympic Committee and announced that Her Royal Highness the Princess of Asturias will be the Honorary President of the Organizing Committee.

The president of Valencia Sailing Federation pointed out that the 2013 420 World Championship will be a great preparation for the 2020 Olympics. Borja Boronat, the regional secretary of Valencia 420 Class expressed the Class’ satisfaction to have the Championship being held in Valencia where there are “great sailing conditions and fantastic facilities in RCN Valencia.”

“Valencia does not need to show that is capable of organize great sailing events,” said the President of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, Jose Angel Rodriguez, “and RCN Valencia with more than 110 years of history has experience enough to hold great regattas."

The local Sports Counselor Cristobal Grau remarked on the importance of all the institutions working together in this project, “with the shared purpose to show the world that the city is capable to hold big sailing events.” Sports director of the regional Government Mateo Castella acknowledged the great labour of the RCN Valencia to promote sailing events and pointed out the importance of organizing this 420 World Championship for the city.

RCN Valencia is holding the 420 World and World Championship from the 22nd to the 30th of July. The Club expects the presence of 200 teams with 400 sailors participating.
