A gentle start to the working week at the Laser Radial World Championships
Perfect sunshine greeted the early arrivals to the regatta site for the Laser Radial World Championships at Largs this morning with only gentle NW’ly breezes coming down the estuary almost from the direction of the Kyles of Bute.
Initially the wind was just ruffling the surface of the water but it has built to an almost raceable 4-5 knots but there seems like a pretty wide divergence between the various weather forecasts, and so far none of them have been predicted the wind direction we have.
In fact most are predicting breeze which would be marginal for racing, less than 5 knots seems like the prediction which is common to most of the forecasts in circulation among event staff and coaches.
So, one way or another, it might be another long day. After the high emotions of last night’s world cup football after a late evening racing and not forgetting a very successful haggis dinner and taste of Scottish cuisine hosted by the Scottish Sailing Institute at Largs Sailing Club, the more gentle conditions might not go amiss.
Largs is showing a very different side to what has prevailed over the last ten days, even with some warmer temperatures, and even some remarkable sunsets.
The Women’s fleet are now into their Finals phase of racing with Sari Multala, who won the title last year in Japan, on top of the leaderboard from Marit Bouwmeester (NED)and Tania Elias Calles Wolf. Bouwmeester and Elles Calles Wolf are the only sailors in the women’s fleet to have finished in the top ten in every one of their races so far.
In the Men’s fleet it is the Polish pair Marcin Rudawski and Wojciech Zemke who are setting a ferocious pace with 4pts and 5pts respectively from their four counting races so far. And the Men split to gold and silver fleets after today’s racing.
Both fleets have gone on the water on schedule this morning.
