So far it has been a grey, cloudy, windy, damp Sunday morning at the Laser Radial World Championships regatta site, but things are predicted to improve.
Wind and rain seem like the obvious themes for the Sunday sermon, but the good news is that the front which is passing over this morning should clear away and offer some decent racing conditions during the afternoon. It could be a long day today with patience required until the conditions improve enough.
But the regatta is on schedule so far, with the four races which constitute a championship now completed. The women's Olympic class fleet splits after today into gold and silver fleets. The men's fleet split to gold and silver after tomorrow (Monday)'s racing.
Readings from the water and around the coast near Largs have revealed swind speeds of over 35knots which is pretty much close to what most of the forecasts were predicting. And, as predicted the wind has veered from the early S'ly direction through into a due W'ly direction which we now have at the regatta site. By mid afternoon it is forecast that we should see something around 14-16 knots and - wait for it - clearing skies.
At the top of the women's standings it is very close with four sailors all on eight points. Marit Bouwmeester (NED) leads really by virtue of countback, La Rochelle's Sarah Steyaert is second, Paige Railey (USA) is third, Sari Multala (FIN) in fourth makes up the 8pts posse, whilst Bulgaria's 2007 world champion Tania Drozdovskaya is fifth on 9 pts.
