Day 2 and the breeze this morning at the Laser Radial World Championships regatta site in Largs is a very puffy and chilly easterly.
In this offshore breeze here then because the wind accelerates down the hills at the back of the town then there is often more wind on and close to the land than actually makes it out on to the race area. There is certainly anything between 8 and 18 knots around the regatta venue, but quite a bit less out in the estuary. Easterly is very challenging for the sailors as it is usually riddled with big changes in wind direction and pressure. The official forecast shows only three to ten knots of wind from around 040 to 080 degrees veering mid afternoon round to 120 to 160 and building very slightly. There is significantly more than that around Largs and the gusts are scudding across the water and the flags are rattling hard, but it is probably three and a half miles across to the start area of the furthest east course.
It's a chilly morning with little sign of sunshine as the competitors settle into the regatta routine. In the Women's championship Marit Bouwmeester and Anna Tunnicliffe both go on the water having had the best scoring opening yesterday with a first and second apiece, whilst a perfect pair of bullets put Poland's Wojciech Zemke in the driving seat in the Men's championship.
