Headland Hotel backs Tapp for King of the Surf at Fistral

 

The thrill seeking James Tapp will be returning to Fistral Beach, Newquay this weekend for the third and fourth round of the Cornish "King of the Surf" Championship.

Tapp, the current points leader in his 50 hp Tohatsu powered ThunderCat will be handed an extra boost for his challenge for the crown, The Headland Hotel & Spa will join Microlink and Ahmad Tea as his race partners.

The Headland, Cornwall’s iconic hotel is known as a world class hotel and James in equal measure, is looking to match his race partner with a world class position later this year in Malta in the UIM ThunderCat World Championship.

Before then, the father of two and 3 time RYA British Champion said, "I am really looking forward to the surf, the 20 boat competition and hopefully receiving podium laurels from a representative of The Headland after the races on the Saturday and Sunday evenings."

ThunderCat Racing taking place at Fistral Beach this Saturday and Sunday between 11.30 and 16.00, 30th - 31st May.

Information;

ThunderCat Racing  is a global sport with over 18 countries holding championships. The Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) is the international governing body and the British Championship is governed by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA).

ThunderCat's are inflatable catamarans and are predominately manufactured in South Africa where the sport began back in the early 1980's. Manufacturers include: Aquarius, BobKat, Gemini, Infanta and Ceasar.

All of the boats are fitted with a 2 stroke 50 hp Tohatsu outboard engine.

ThunderCat Racing has three carefully designed disciplines to push teams to the limit -

M-SHAPE -  Mainly run in Surf;  is a short course approx 200m x 300m
CIRCUIT - This is a larger course approx 500m x 500m for achieving the maximum speed the tunnel hull can provide (110 kpm)
LONGHAUL/ENDURO - Run over a distance of 100km+ teams will be sent off down the coast to specific locations, beach the boat and run around a checkpoint.
