Impressive Line-up for Legends' Trophy

 

The Legends Trophy is taking place to celebrate the achievements of Olympic and World Champions in the 470 Class, and will bring past and current Champions together in a series of head to head races in La Rochelle, France.

Taking place on super Sunday, 4 August, which marks the half-way point of the 470 Class 50th Anniversary Celebrations in La Rochelle, France, the 470 Legends' trophy will be a unique celebration of talent.

The first entries for the Legends Trophy have been registered. Fifteen crews from Australia, Croatia, France, Italy, New Zealand, Ukraine and USA have already confirmed their participation, among them Olympic Champions in 1988, 1996 and 2012; the first World Champions, the Carré brothers from France, and the current Olympic gold medallists, Mat Belcher and Malcolm Page from Australia.

The concept of the 470 Legends' Trophy is to reunite in a friendly competition past generations of 470 Champions to showcase them and pay respect to their achievements, whilst also inspiring the current generation of younger 470 sailors.

Nautivela are providing 12 brand new 470s with sails provided by Zaoli, with additional boats supplied by by individual owners.

Invitations to the 470 Legends’ Trophy have been sent out to eligible teams who are requested to confirm their participation by 1 June 2013. The 470 Legends’ Trophy is limited to an entry list of 30 crews, on a first come first served basis.

The racing format will be a qualifying series and one final race, with teams divided into fleets based on year of competition. The top ten teams at the end of the qualifying series will advance to the final race.

The first ever World Champions, brothersYves and Hervé Carré, have confirmed their participation. Will be fascinating to see this pair back in action 43 years after they won their World Championship gold.
