Latest News March 2012
STOP PRESS The 12mRs Italia and Crusader will be racing with us this year
The Royal London Yacht Club in conjunction with the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club, Royal Victoria Yacht Club and the Island Sailing Club are pleased to announce the issue of the Preliminary Notice for this event which is attached. Invitations are extended to owners of metre yachts and classic racing keelboats to enter this regatta to be held in the Central Solent based at Cowes.
The Regatta is intended for all classic racing keelboats including, but not restricted to: 12mR, 8mR, 6mR (classic and modern), 5.5m, Daring, Dragon (classic and modern), Solent Sunbeam, Bembridge Redwing, Seaview Mermaid, XOD, Victory and Bembridge, Loch Long and Yarmouth One Designs.
There will be a Revival class this year (racing on club TCF handicap) for any boats entered with insufficient numbers to make up a class which is expected to include 20 and 30 sqm, Classic Redwing, Mersey Milnes , half raters and Old Gaffer Association dayboats from the Western Solent.
Racing will involve a combination of windward-leeward ‘Derby’ type courses and Solent ‘Grand National’ type courses requiring more consideration of ‘obstacles’ including tidal factors. Tea and cake will be served after racing – home made by club members.
The main sponsor for this year’s Regatta is Harken and we are most grateful for their continuing support. Harken provide the Trophy for the overall winner and class prizes
There are other interesting trophies to be won such as the Queen Victoria Jubilee Cup, the Claude Cayley Cup and the Bartlett Cup which were all originally raced for in the 1920s and 30s by the Js and metre boats.
Other sponsors include Cowes Harbour Commissioners, Classic Boat, Haines Boatyard, Kendalls Fine Art and Swordsman Charters, Ocean World, Roberts Charts, Wilmot Marine Services and the Yachting Studio.
Social events will take place at a different location each evening and this year will include a Welcome Reception at the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club, a reception at the Classic Boat Museum at East Cowes in their new extended premises (adjacent to where the replica of Britannia is being fitted out) and a reception and supper at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club to celebrate, in this Olympic year, their running of the first Olympic Sailing Regatta off Ryde in 1908. Dress at this event will be optional classic attire to suit the age of your boat.
Cowes Classics Week flows neatly into the Household Division and Royal Yacht Squadron Regatta weekend of the 28 and 29 July 2012.
