IP Office SB20 UK Nationals in Weymouth - Day 1

With boats launched and competitors registered and briefed.

The IP Office SB20 UK National Championships got underway today on Weymouth Bay in fifteen (chilly) knots of wind and rolling seas. Although only three races were scheduled for today, the Race Committee took the wise precaution to run a fourth race as the weather forecast for Friday and Saturday is looking dubious.

After four races, Team Russia lead the fleet, having delivered an impressive performance. "We've been training really hard all winter in Portugal, our crew work is really polished. We sailed well together today and didn't make many mistakes," explained Oleg Zherebtsov on the dock after sailing.

Craig Burlton, Stephen White and Roger Gilbert lie second overall having not sailed in the fleet since the Spring Championships in April. A great result for them. "The Russians are sailing really well, they've not got better boat speed than us, but they are extremely consistent and their starts are very clean," explained Burlton. "We're lacking time together in the boat, but we're pleased to be second at the end of today."

It might have been a long day on the water, but everyone returned ashore full of smiles and positive chatter to enjoy drinks in the bar provided by the title sponsor, IP Office.

Today's conditions were enjoyed by all, everyone is sure to sleep well tonight! Racing continues tomorrow, weather permitting!
